What this is

An aluminum railing system is a prefabricated guard built from extruded aluminum posts, top and bottom rails, and picket infill, all powder-coated for corrosion resistance and assembled to manufacturer spec on site. The systems we install - Regal Ideas, Westbury, and RailingKing - are engineered, tested, and certified to Alberta Building Code 9.8.8 requirements for 42" guard height, infill spacing, and structural load capacity.

Compared to wood railings, aluminum eliminates the maintenance cycle entirely; compared to steel it's lighter and corrosion-proof without painted coatings. We install aluminum more than any other railing material in our market.

Who this is for

  • Homeowners who want a one-and-done railing system with zero ongoing maintenance
  • Owners of composite or Duradek decks where wood railings would visually clash
  • Rental and second-home owners who can't service a wood-railing maintenance cycle
  • Buyers replacing aging or non-code-compliant wood railings (common on pre-2006 Canmore decks)
  • Anyone who wants the visual minimalism of slim picket infill so the view drives the design

Our process

  1. Free site visit & measure. We measure perimeter, count corners, identify stair runs, and check existing structure for mount-capable blocking.
  2. System & colour selection. Physical samples brought to your site for colour, top-rail profile, and picket style selection.
  3. Fixed-price quote. Itemized by linear foot with mounting hardware, gates (if any), and stair railing transitions priced separately.
  4. Order & lead time. Standard Regal Ideas colours ship in 5–10 business days; custom colours and Westbury premium lines run 4–8 weeks.
  5. Installation. Post locations marked and blocked, brackets through-bolted, posts plumbed, rails clipped or bolted per system spec, picket infill installed last. Typical 60-lf install is one day on site.
  6. Inspection & walkthrough. Municipal final inspection where required (decks over 0.6 m off grade), then a walkthrough of the lifetime workmanship guarantee and manufacturer finish warranty.

Pricing factors

  • Installed range: $75–110 /lf for standard surface-mount Regal Ideas with picket infill, code-compliant 42" height
  • Premium upgrade: Westbury heavier-extrusion systems with extended warranty add $20–35 /lf
  • Stair runs: Stair railing transitions add 20–30% per linear foot vs. straight runs due to angle-cut posts and rake-cut pickets
  • Custom colours: Add $8–15 /lf and 4–6 weeks lead time over standard powder-coat colours
  • Gates and corner posts: Each self-closing gate $450–700; each corner adds one post (~$85–120)

Bow Valley local context

Two Bow Valley conditions drive railing decisions here. First is the Chinook wind: warm dry winds that descend the eastern slopes regularly hit sustained 80 km/h with gusts to 100+ km/h, particularly through the Three Sisters and Cougar Creek areas. Picket-infill aluminum railings present minimal wind cross-section (unlike glass panels), so wind load is rarely a structural concern - we follow manufacturer post-spacing spec (typically 6 ft max, tighter on exposed elevations) and through-bolt every post into solid blocking.

The second driver is freeze-thaw. Alberta Building Code requires 42" guard height and 100 mm (4") maximum infill spacing - both unchanged. What changes in our climate is fastener selection: bright steel screws into PT framing will corrode within 3 years due to the copper in MCA-treated lumber. We use stainless or hot-dip galvanized fasteners throughout, no exceptions.

For mounting onto Duradek decks (over rooftops or living space), we use fascia-mount brackets to avoid penetrating the membrane - surface-mounting through Duradek voids the membrane warranty.

The Town of Canmore requires permits for any deck and railing modification over 0.6 m off grade; railing-only replacements typically don't require permits but we confirm on a case-by-case basis. At 1,400 m elevation with 20% higher UV than Calgary, powder-coat finish quality matters more than at lower elevations - premium-tier Westbury and Regal Ideas powder coats are validated for 25+ years of alpine UV exposure.

Why choose Canmore Deck Builders

Authorized dealer for all three major systems

We hold dealer accounts with Regal Ideas, Westbury, and RailingKing, which means trade pricing, direct factory support on warranty claims, and access to colours and profiles that aren't always at big-box retailers. We quote three systems side-by-side on every request so you see the real tradeoff between value and premium tiers.

Mounting that respects the deck below

The #1 failure mode on aluminum railings isn't the railing - it's the mount. We through-bolt every post into solid blocking sized to manufacturer spec, never into decking-only. On Duradek decks we use fascia-mount brackets to keep the membrane intact and warranty-protected. We treat every mount as a structural connection because that's what it is.

Code-compliant by default

Every system we quote meets Alberta Building Code 9.8.8: 42" minimum height, 100 mm max infill spacing, 200 lb concentrated lateral load capacity. We don't quote sub-code systems even when clients ask for them, because non-compliant railings show up on home inspections and become a sale-killer at resale.
