What this is
An Ipe deck is built with kiln-dried, FSC-certified tropical hardwood as the wear surface, typically over an MCA pressure-treated SPF substructure on helical piles. Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is a Brazilian hardwood with a Janka hardness of 3,684 lbf - more than four times that of larch and ten times cedar - and a density of roughly 1,050 kg/m³, dense enough that the wood doesn't float.
It's the standard for premium decking on properties where the deck is a 50-year investment and lifecycle cost matters more than upfront cost. We also install Cumaru, Massaranduba, and Garapa from the same family of South American hardwoods.
Who this is for
- Owners of forever homes in Three Sisters, Silvertip, Spring Creek, or Eagle Terrace where decade-over-decade lifecycle cost is the right way to think
- Homeowners in wildfire-interface zones who want the safety upgrade of Class A flame-spread rating without chemical treatment
- Anyone who finds composite decking looks plastic and wants the depth of grain only real hardwood delivers
- Architects and designers specifying premium outdoor materials for modern alpine homes
- Owners replacing failed cedar or PT and ready to step out of the maintenance cycle for the next 50 years
Our process
- Free site visit & material discussion. We bring sample boards of Ipe, Cumaru, Massaranduba, and Garapa so you can see and handle the actual stock before committing.
- Fixed-price quote with FSC documentation. Every Ipe quote includes the FSC certificate path so you know the provenance of the wood going on your home.
- Permits & engineering. Town of Canmore (or Parks Canada for Banff) development and building permit. Engineered drawings for any deck over 0.6 m off grade.
- Substructure & helical piles. Driven to 1.2 m below frost. PT joists at 12" o.c. - Ipe's density actually allows wider spacing but we don't take advantage of it because the substructure needs to outlast the surface.
- Acclimatization (10–14 days). Hardwood stacked and stickered on site to reach Bow Valley equilibrium moisture content (roughly 10–12% interior, lower outdoor).
- Pre-drilled fastening & finishing. Every screw position pre-drilled, stainless steel fasteners only, optional first coat of Penofin Hardwood Formula or Cutek Extreme. Final municipal inspection.
Tropical hardwood comparison
Ipe gets the headlines but the broader tropical-hardwood category has several excellent options at different price points.
| Species | Janka | Cost (decking) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) | 3,684 lbf | ~$15–22 /lf | Class A fire, 50-year life, olive-brown to dark chocolate. Our most-specified. |
| Cumaru (Brazilian Teak) | 3,540 lbf | ~$11–16 /lf | Golden-brown to rust, slight oily feel, ~40-year service life. Excellent value. |
| Massaranduba (Brazilian Redwood) | 3,190 lbf | ~$10–14 /lf | Deep red to mahogany, dramatic alpine warmth, ~35-year service life. |
| Garapa (Brazilian Ash) | 1,650 lbf | ~$9–12 /lf | Light honey colour, softer than Ipe, easier to work, ~30-year service life. |
Profile options: 5/4 × 6 (1" actual) is the standard premium profile. 1 × 4 narrow profiles ($1–2/lf premium) give a tighter, more modern visual. Pre-grooved boards for hidden fastener clips add ~$2/lf.
Pricing factors
- Installed range: $145–200 /sq ft for a standard single-level Ipe deck on helical piles with pre-drilled stainless fastening and basic perimeter railing
- Species selection: Garapa or Massaranduba can drop installed cost by 15–25% vs. Ipe with similar visual impact
- Fastener system: Hidden-clip systems (Ipe Clip, Eb-Ty) on pre-grooved boards add $8–12/sq ft over face-screwed; standard on premium Ipe builds
- FSC certification: Adds ~$1.50/lf vs. non-certified Ipe - we don't quote non-certified, but it's a real line item in the cost
- Height & engineering: Decks over 0.6 m off grade require engineered drawings (~$800–1,400) and stamped guard details
Bow Valley local context
The fire rating matters here more than most places. The Town of Canmore's FireSmart program identifies large portions of the residential area as wildland-urban interface, particularly properties backing onto forest in Three Sisters, Silvertip, Cougar Creek, and the south side of Eagle Terrace. The 2003 Lost Creek fire and the more recent Jasper fires (2024) underline the risk.
Ipe's Class A flame spread rating under ASTM E84 - achieved without chemical treatment - makes it one of the few decking materials that doesn't require an exemption discussion when building near forest.
For structural design, the Town of Canmore's 2.5 kPa ground snow load and 1.2 m frost depth still govern even though Ipe could span further than we ever ask it to. We install over PT joists at 12" o.c. on helical piles - same substructure spec as a cedar build. At 1,400 m elevation with 20% higher UV than Calgary, all tropical hardwoods will silver to a uniform grey within 18–24 months unless finished.
We hand every Ipe client a choice: let it silver naturally (zero maintenance), or apply a UV-protective penetrating oil (Penofin, Cutek) on a 24–30 month cycle to hold the original warm colour. Acclimatization is the install detail that makes or breaks Ipe in this climate: we stack and sticker for 10–14 days minimum so the wood reaches local equilibrium moisture before fastening.
Why choose Canmore Deck Builders
FSC chain-of-custody on every Ipe job
Non-certified Ipe is a quiet but real environmental problem - Brazilian logging concessions are not all legitimate, and the cheaper boards often have no traceable origin. We only quote and install FSC-certified Ipe and hand you the certificate documentation at handover. It's roughly $1.50/lf more than the cheap stuff and worth every cent.
100% FSC-certified on every tropical hardwood deck since 2017 · supplier documentation
Pre-drilling discipline that protects the wood
Ipe will split or strip a power-driven screw every time. Every fastener position on every board edge gets pre-drilled with a tapered countersink bit - typically 600–900 holes on a standard 400 sq ft deck. We don't take shortcuts on this. The result is a deck with zero split board ends, ever.

Lifecycle-cost honesty
Ipe is not the right answer for every project. We'll run the math with you: amortized over 50 years, Ipe at $175/sq ft installed pencils out cheaper per year than mid-tier composite at $130/sq ft with a 25-year warranty. But if you're planning to sell in 7 years, you'll never recover the upfront cost. We give you the honest comparison upfront.
